In terms of transitioning into university, it is important to establish links with schools, as well as to consider the first-year experience of students. Collaborating with secondary schools for example, can provide opportunities for students to experience university study before they leave high school. START QUT is an enhanced studies program that offers university experience and preferential entry for year 12 students. Students in the program take one or more QUT units, attending the same classes and undertaking the same assessment as university students. The program helps students in their choice of course while helping to recruit gifted and motivated secondary students to the University’s programs. In terms of transitioning out of university, it is important to establish relationships with employers in the professional workforce. Collaborating with employers create pathways and learning experiences for students. The QUT Career Mentor Scheme provides final-year students the opportunity to learn about the professional workplace. This is achieved through personal contact with industry professionals relevant to their field of study. Students are introduced to the realities of work in the profession or industry through activities such as ‘shadowing’ the mentor at work. In some cases, this arrangement may lead to a longer term commitment such as an offer of work experience or a job.
