Substantial growth in electricity peak demand coupled with aging of both assets and the workforce have led to a very strong demand for power engineering graduates nationally.
Starting from models developed by QUT and the Queensland power industry there is now a strong power engineering bursary program nationally, supporting more than 60 new students each year and throughout the four years of the courses. The national program is offered through the Australian Power Institute (API) representing companies in the electricity industry.
QUT has played a significant part in the bid for development of a national power engineering curriculum, with API and other universities. There have been two rounds of national support for the process and the first modules are now starting to be delivered to supplement undergraduate training in industry relevant modules.
QUT, with the University of Queensland, will be the support universities for the 2010 API two-week residential school for experienced engineers.
The QUT Power Engineering Group is a national leader in power engineering research with research projects involving companies in five states and current research links with several leading universities in power engineering.
The research covers the national grid and QUT is providing over 700 student sessions of 20-hour modules of training to power industry professionals in topics such as earthing and protection.
